poo obsessed says:

I have been seeing several different doctors over the past three years for several different problems to include pain during intercourse and lower abdominal pain. Over all of my doctor visits we have discovered that my problem stems from constipation. My question is this. I have done everything the doctors have asked to include eating 25-30 grams of fiber a day, taking citrucel twice a day, drinking 8 glasses of water a day, and exercising. I have been doing all of these things consistantly since April(except the citucel that is a new addition as of three weeks ago.) The problem is I am still constipated and I am desperate. The only time I have a really good poo is after taking laxative (and no I don't and have never abused them) What I want to know is what the hell is wrong with me????? I am depserate to poop and not just pebbles, not to mention the pain during sex. I never knew that poo could control my life like it has, please help!!!! Thank you

Dear Poo-obsessed,

Well, if you have seen all those doctors for all those years, I am not sure what exactly it is that I, lowly Poonurse, can do for you.

I will tell you that Fleets enemas are better for you to use than laxatives. Your body gets addicted to laxatives after a while. Years of laxative use has left your colon virtually unable to do its business without them.

Check with your doctor first!!!, but I would give you this advice: Keep up the fiber and the water. TONS of water. Use a gentle Fleets enema every few days for a while. No more laxatives. After a while, decrease the frequency of the enemas until (hopefully) your body can go on its' own.

Please be advised that I am only a Poonurse. I am NOT a medical doctor. Any advice I give should be taken moderate skepticism. Please consult a REAL medical doctor if you feel you have a serious medical condition.

-- Poonurse

Poonurse is an RN with 25 years experience in labor and delivery. Her qualifications include seeing a lot of poop, and owning a computer. Also, she works in Michigan, which she calls the asshole of the universe, so that's another bit of credibility.

Got a question for her?

i have been constipated for a few months. Every 4 or so days i get so frustrated that i use laxatives, but i read that they are not good for you. So tongiht i took a fleet enema but my poops coming out so painful and really really thin! what does this mean?

Once again SEE YOUR DOCTOR if this pain is beyond what constipation usually gives. Don't keep holding it. Advanced constipation requires manual removal (Hand up there or surgery) so try to go if you can. And see a doctor.

AC, poonurse is no longer with us, so I will step in and answer this one. If you have been constipated for this long it is likely that there are a number of different things that may be the cause.

1. Are you on anti-depressants? These are horrible butt blockers. They can cause giant logs, hard shit, and a difficulty in passing a stool.

2. Are you drinking enough water? Sometimes this causes logs to become hard to pass, or turns them into little pellets.

3. Are you taking calcium tablets? This is another cause of constipation. When I was taking these tablets I had massive turds that were at least three inches across and caused streaking on the way out. (RED streaking! Ouch!)

4. Have you suddenly changed diets? Often someone who has been eating mostly vegetarian and suddenly starts eating meat may encounter a constipation problem for a few months. This is often due to either systematic shock or the sudden increase in protein intake.

5. If none of these factors rule in (and you are not pregnant) than you should definately see a doctor. Any time you can not have a bowel movement without a laxative (at least if this has become an everyday/week occurrance) is considered a medical emergency and needs to be checked by a doctor. Especially if passing a stool is painful or you are having thin, ribbon-like movements. This may be a sign of an intestinal blockage or even a tumor!

I had the constipation problem and I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I drank alot of water, ate alot of fibre, metamucil and all the other stuff. Nothing worked.

Try cutting out junk food, eat more healthy, eat more insoluble fibres than soluble, such as apples, salads, wheat..., drink tons of water.

Also, try taking a tablespoon of flaxseed oil 3 times a day. That will soften your stools.

Anonymous's picture

If you have severe constipation, you may not want to go on high fiber to rid constipation. Fiber will absorb water and will worsen the constipation. Unless you have been on prolonged laxative use, your colon is ready to move the feces along but only if you loosen it. Water or coffee enema have been one of the easiest and effective ways. If this method does not seem appealing to you, try Oxyflush . It releases oxygen and gently loosens the stools without side effects and create dependence. All the best!

Poo obsessed,

Something like what you describe happened to me due to getting a parasite (we called them ameobas). I was living in Africa and probably exposed to unclean food, but my cousin in TX had something similar, probably from eating game. I think I was put on Flagyl. It wasn't easy to diagnose because the cysts and trophes (evidence of infection) aren't always present in the stool sample. See if you can't get checked out for this.

See a doctor, you very likley have IBS-C. I have gone through what you are describing for 13 years, it is no fun. Talk to your doctor about doing a colon cleanse. Don't rely on laxatives too much, that can lead to laxative dependancy. There is a product called Digestrol, I took this product, and have been 90% constipation free for almost one year. Again, talk to your doctor, as everybody's body responds different to different treatments.

Walking can help stimulate peristalsis (rippling activity of the bowel that moves stuff along). That and the water that Poonurse suggested may help. Hope so.

My girlfriend took an enema about 10:00 last night because she couldn't poop for almost 5 days. Well now she poops all over the place and it's 8:30 the next night and she's still pooping every 30 minutes to 1 hour. She can't stop. What do I do? All I know to do is give her gatorade. How do I get this to stop, she's miserable

TSV is right. Make sure to drink enough water. I have the same problem you mentioned. Talk to your doctor about doing a colon cleanse. Dr Natura has a wonderful product. Also. Go to this website www.techmedica.com/digestrol.html · There is a product called Digestrol, this product got me off of laxatives. Why don't you try water therapy. This is when you first wake up in the morning, you drink 1.5 liters of water. But please make sure you do not drink anymore, there is such thing as water intoxication. Listen to your body for how much you should drink, but 1.5 liters should be fine, I do it myself every morning and it should help. Why don't you check up water therapy on google.

I have to go to the bathroom 3 to 4 times a day and then strain terribly to poop out a few nuggets, sometimes a little log with nuggets. In order to even get to the point of straining however, I have to sit on the toilet for like 20 minutes and then my legs and feet get numb. But the point is also, after I finally get a poop out.... slowly for the next two to three hours I feel like I have to go again but there is nothing to push out....feels like I have a ball in my rectum as well. This happens all day and all night. I finally pass a stool, and it hurts by the way and then the cycle starts all over again.....Also I am a male, when I get sexually hard, I have a deep sharp pain in my rectum as well.....what the hell is going on here with all these symptoms???? Back to the poop....it seems am feeling the process of my stools moving through my rectum from begining to end and I am not supposed to feel anything until the damn thing is ready to come out.......Help please.....I have pain in my rectum in varying degrees and weird feelings there all the time. Something is not right with all this (the sex part and the pooping part)!!

Young teenage Anonymous Coward.....Tell your parents you need to see a doctor. I am not a medical professional but I certainly think going to the toilet four times in fifteen minutes is excessive. It is better to go now rather than waiting until the problem is possibly worse. Good luck....do it now, don't wait.

Okay I never in my life thought I would write on a wall but here I am.... I just went thru a week worth of testing at a major city hospital on the east coast & found out that my colon doesn't want to do its job. All the testing I had came back ok accept for my colon:( dam thing. Has anyone ever had a colectomy? The GI brought this up at our first visit and I believe this is what he is looking to do plz help I'm very nervous.

sittingpretty's picture
Comment Quality Moderatori 2000+ points

Yes, lukey, I have heard of a colectomy. I have been told for the last 3-4 years that I need a sub-total colectomy. A colectomy is when they remove the whole colon and the rectum which leaves you with a colostomy bag covering a stoma on theleft side of the abdomen. A sub-total colectomy is when the colon is removed but the rectum stays. I have been holding out like a big dog. I'm keeping my colon.

Hey sittingpretty, thank you for replying so fast, I believe the sub-total colectomy is what my doc was speaking of, I would like to do more research but not sure of where to look. If you have any information that can clue me in, it would be greatly appricated. Just some FYI I have been like this since 2000 had 4 surgeries for adhesions and it helped some but only a few months last surgery no adhesions but still in pain so that's why this route.

lukey, are you incontinent of bowel(do you poo your pants without trying)? There is the risk of incontinence of bowel that never goes away. There is risk of watery stools for the rest of your life. The incontinence of bowel is what scares me. Having to poop liquishit relentlessly doesn't sound good to me either. That's about all I know.

Sitting pretty,
Saw my GI doc. today and all he did was put me on more meds. Our goal was to get off all the meds but he added more to my already full basket. He is one of the top docs across the nation so I guess he knows what he is talking about; he wants me to take a cocktail of laxatives every 3 days, not sure how I'm going to do this with work but I guess I have to try(or I lose my job for being on the pot to much). Well that's all for now just wanted to be out of pain and off the meds, but that isn't going to happen for now. Thanks for reading..

Anonymous Coward's picture

I myself used to be constipated for 3-4 months. I began taxing some laxative called Dulcolax although I came to find that I was taking it every 4 days so I kind of got dependent on it. If you're on a diet, try stop that and return to your old eating habits. Also try Magnesia milk, it helped me very much and after I took that for a week along with water and a healthy diet (5 meals per day every 2,5-3 hours) everything went back to normal.

I use my weekends for the clean out, therefore, I have no social life. It has been that way, for me for the last six years.

sittingpretty's picture
Comment Quality Moderatori 2000+ points

lukey, your health is more important than your family's social life. You will have to let your wife handle the kids on the weekend or arrange for the children to get rides so you can stay home and clean out. You could also take off of work with a doctors note to get things going. You are going to have to re-arrange your schedule some kind of way so you can take care of yourself. You are going to have to re-evaluate your priorities with pooing being your top priority. You must put your pooping needs before social events. If it were cancer you would be forced to. Those of us who have severe constipation are at a higher risk for getting colon cancer. Therefore, you must take care of your bowels now.

Sittypretty,
first the name lukey came from my brother when I was younger, I am his younger sister and not the brother he so wanted, that said I am the wife who runs everyone around. I work as a educator and getting time to leave the classroom for a "potty" break can be hard. I've been out of work for 6mos. without pay so times are tough and getting back to work is a must. I also have IC and am waiting to see a specialist for in the near future, the two IC and constipation go hand and hand I'm told so Ihope I hear news from there. Thank you for all your words of encouragement.

Sorry, lukey. Your words were not gender specific, so I just guessed that you were the man. Lukey, I have IC as well. I get Superior Hypogastric Plexus Blocks every two months for the pain. I used to take enemas daily for the constipation until I dropped to 80 pounds. I have had a a long hard road to travel to get where I am today. I had to take 13 months off of work, the first time. Four months the second time and again last december until the end of February this year. So I know how hard it is financially. I understand where you are. If your back is against the wall, you can do nothing but pray about it. That might sound weird but it is true. Also, get your man to run the kiddies around so you can clean out. Do you get off at 3pm? If you do, you can start your xlean out as soon as you get home, so you will be finished by morning(Saturday morning) The enema is not the problem if it comes out. Its the ducolax and mg cit that will run you every 2 minutes for several hours. You need to get that poop out.

Lukey, you have to take care of yourself. Your body is screaming for you to take care of yourself. It is a nerve block using steriod. I have been getting them for 6 years. Two and a half years ago, I chose to stop taking the cocktail of addictive prescriptions I was taking to control the pain. The heating pad, hot water bottle, massages, and superior hypogastric plexus blocks are my pain pills, muscle relaxers and antianxiolics. I think my IC is the least of my problems as my bowels have taken the stage front and center. The block helps my Hircshsprung's pain as well. for the past couple of years i have had dull lower abdominal pain. I have been tested for cysts, kidney sand, everything. I have had blood tests ultrasounds and even a cat scan, but none of the doctors can seem to find anything. every test comes back negative. My doctors have been telling me it is constipation or irritable bowel syndrome, but i can not imagine poop hurting me for years! also during sex, at certain angles i feel severe pain. can constipation cause pain? please let me know

manny,
Welcome to all of our pain, I too have suffered for 10years like this. I do have constipation to the point my colon has slowed down to much. Along with your GI docs have you tried a URO/GYNO they can help with pelvic floor pain, and run other test that can help them find out what is wrong with you. Not sure what part of the country you live in but in the northeast we have some wonderful specialist dealing with this issues. I am seeing a new doc in a few months for something called IC(been diagnosed) it seem IC and constipation go hand and hand. Good Luck

Manny, I am having pains like you've described recently and it drives me absolutely crazy! My lower pelvic area is always in pain and something tells me it's in my colo-rectal area. I don't think mine is in the "gyno" area either. Go with your "gut"...no pun intended...and see another specialist that can help you out. I am going to get a referral from my family physician this week. Let me know what happens.
Also, do you have extreme pains in the lower pelvic area when you first stand up from sitting or lying down?
