Charles the 4th sent an email to us last week with a link that leads to a Vanguard episode hosted on the website hulu.com. I asked him for a brief description of the episode, and he had the following to say:

"This documentary reminds us that we take toilets and proper plumbing for granted. The creator visits India and Indonesia to show what the conditions are like there, such as a river in India that is devoid of life and literally bubbling with methane due to the amount of feces in it.

If you take the time to watch it, you will view and appreciate the efforts that the World Toilet Organization and other groups are making to eliminate open air defecation and encourage the adoption of sanitation."

The episode is called "World's Toilet Crisis", and you can view it by clicking on this link here. He warned me that is not to be viewed by the faint of heart, and that it lasts about forty-five minutes. If you do have the time, I suggest that you watch the documentary, hosted by correspondent Adam Yamaguchi, for a better appreciation of your own toilet.

Below is a sixty-second preview of the documentary. As you can see from the opening screen shot, modesty was not considered during filming.

Pollution is a resource in the wrong place. One of the richest fertilizers available is the composted poop found in sewage sludge.

Shitting in open fields and such is environmentally disastrous but recycled poop could contribute greatly to the world's food problem.

Human waste is a wasted asset. Here as well! Unless you are a poop reporter, you want to touch a leaver, have the poop magically disappear, and never hear, think, or see, it ever again.
Methane digesters could run our cars. Compost could grow crops. Non-food crops, if people are squeamish. The third world may need an education, but we need a reality check.

I watched most of the longer film before an interruption occurred. Truly appalling--but it is heartening that some are becoming conscious of the perils and dangers of untreated poop getting into food and water. Thanks for posting this, Daphne!

I'm glad that Charles sent this in. A few years ago, Poopreport raised over $17,000.00 for a village in India that Dave had started to become active in -- he and his wife Jenny had taken an interest in helping a girl's school, and they decided to raise funds to give each girl's home an outhouse. If you search the site for Poopreport Gives Back, I'm sure your memory will be jogged.

The outhouse design allowed for a family to have a place to poop, and it allowed for that poop to sterilize from the heat of its own decomposition. Each outhouse cost $250. I hope that the country's government can someday find the funds to begin changing the way things are now, because there are alternatives, as we've already seen.

Daphne ... One of the present day tragedies of our planet is that India and Pakistan could provide a much better life for a combined total of about 1,319,954,000 people if they would give up their hatred for each other and concentrate on what's important.

Squat is right, rather than just being the world's biggest consumer of almost everything we should lead by example. Rather than demanding respect for our military might we should try showing the rest of the world how easy it is to do things right.

I find it rather sad indeed that the Western World seems oblivious to the obvious !

poopingthecolour, a lot of the western world is oblivious to the obvious, just look at these trends:

The 9/11 truthers
The Birther's
Weapons of Mass Destruction
The Tea Party Movement
Trickle Down Economics

The West has been bullshitted to so often the above actually looks sane to some. I notice you spelled colour like an Englishman, which means you have socialized health care which means you have death panels there, good luck when you get a hangnail mate;)

This is partly true. We are the only country that uses the spelling color that's english-speaking, that I know of, so this person could be from many places. I think we're also the only advanced country that doesn't have socialzed medicine, but I could be wrong.

We also have one of the worst infant mortality rates for advanced countries, which is inexcusable.

Dear AC from 07.12.2010 ... Isn't it tragic that poopingthecolour is going to have to put up with the terrible health care provided by the NHS for an average of two years more than the average American life span?

You are right Daphne, we rank even below Cuba in infant mortality.

The article and the film were about a whole different topic--the lack of toilets! Those pictures of people out in the open squatting to poop should make us very thankful for living here, where there is no need for such doubtful relief. Thank God for toilets! Spread the word--and, where possible, the means for people in areas of need to enjoy what we do: a comfy sit, in private, with far fewer unsanitary after-effects.

ChiefThunderbutt, I'm the AC you referred to. Yes I find the NHS that our poor poopingincolour will have to subject himself to reprehensible. I'm sure he'd much rather have to deal with an independant insurance company trying to milk as much money from their clients while providing the absolute minimum of care. There is nothing so glorious as reading the fine print for pre-existing conditions, it's a balm or a salve to know that a corporation will take care of us from those wicked death panel NHS operatives. Corporations always have our best interests in mind, just look at BP, Enron, Worldcom, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearnes, AIG, Countrywide Financial, true champions of unregulated democracy!
